News editor sacked over Amazon blunder!

THE FOURTH ESTATE:

BRISBANE: The news editor at Nine News Queensland has been summarily sacked over allowing a two-minute-plus story on Amazon’s Prime Day(s) online sale to run earlier this week.

The executive was escorted from Nine’s Mount Coot-Tha studios (above) yesterday afternoon over what station management claimed was “gross negligence” over that Amazon segment.

A spokesperson for the station management told The Bug: “Don’t get us wrong. It was a fantastic story; one that we can proudly say was missed by the other commercial newsrooms and the ABC’s 7pm bulletin.

“But a segment lasting more than two minutes was far too long given that the Queensland state election is now only just three months and a week away.

“In accord with Nine Entertainment Co. policy, our news editor had been repeatedly instructed to run at least two stories a night on our-of-control youth crime that is keeping Queenslanders cowering in their homes in fright and afraid to venture out.

“At least a third of that Amazon report should have been diverted to a youth-crime story, even if we had to resort to some historic footage of armed youths breaking into homes and images of David Crisafulli and Jarrod Bleijie clasping their blue and yellow plans-for-Queensland handbooks.

“Our news editor was fully aware of the urgent, compelling need to replace the tired, worn-out and directionless Miles Labor government with a Crisafulli-led LNP administration hellbent on solving the escalating youth – and general – crime crisis as well as the many other ills facing Queensland right now, including record ramping levels and the general malaise of our health system and the cost of living crisis affecting each and every Queensland voter.

“No matter how newsworthy the Amazon segment was – and yes, it was a ripper – not using some of that valuable time to achieve the change of government a vast majority of Queensland voters are clearly demanding was an act of “gross negligence”.
