Qantas defends livery change

AVIATION NEWS:

Qantas says it is mere coincidence that it has undertaken a rapid modification of its livery in the wake of the announcement of the 2024 World Airline Awards recognising the best carriers in a range of categories.

Qantas CEO Vanessa Hudson admitted the change (main picture) could be viewed as a response to the airline dropping out of the list of top 20 carriers in the annual awards announced by aviation industry group Skytrax.

“Look, I’m the CEO so the rapid rebranding was my call and also as CEO I take responsibility for the latest Skytrax results.

“I must add that it certainly gives me no JOYCE! – no JOYCE! at all – to see Qantas ranked 24th in this year’s top 100 list compared with being 17th in 2023 and 5th in 2022.

“While I don’t admit they are linked to the awards, I believe that the livery changes will make a difference and I’m sure we’ll be back in the top ranks, but ALAN! good time,” Ms Hudson said.

Qatar Airways reportedly requested Skytrax not to publicise a little-known category of its annual awards in which the Middle Eastern carrier was a clear winner.

A Skytrax spokesperson confirmed that an approach had been made to it by the airline’s senior management asking that its win in the Best Body Search category not be announced publicly and for the award trophy to be posted to its HQ in Doha and not handed over at the awards ceremony in London.

A Dublin-based Irish dancer has bought into the controversy over Qantas’s failure to be included in the Skytrax top-20 list.

Ms Joyce Alan (below) contacted The Bug to argue that the Australian airline’s fall from grace had occurred in just the past few months.

When asked what expertise she had in assessing an airline’s performance, Ms Alan said she had “plenty of experience”, but refused to provide details.

However she did offer to perform an original Irish dance of hers which she called Sábháil mo Bhónas $16 milliún which The Bug discovered when translated to English was “Save My $16 Million Bonus”.
