Hamer meets party heavies

Current Liberal Party candidate for the inner-Melbourne federal seat of Kooyong, Amelia Hamer, has emerged from a meeting with senior officials at the party’s Victorian state headquarters to say she had assurances that she would not be replaced by former MP and federal treasurer Josh Frydenberg.

“I take them at their word although I was somewhat unsettled when I arrived at HQ for the meeting,” she said. (main picture)

“Now that I think of it, they did say they had ‘not decided to replace me’ as the candidate rather than ‘decided not to replace me’.

“I also thought I heard someone around the table whisper the word ‘yet’ very quietly after I was given that assurance.”

While Ms Hamer would not comment further on the confidential meeting, a senior party source said she had been given a very fair hearing.

“What other sort of hearing would a fair-haired top sort like her get from party officials?” the source said.

“All the blokes said they wouldn’t think any less of her if she decided to use the very, very pretty high-heeled shoes she was wearing and walk away on those lovely legs of hers and let our old mate Josh come back.

“But no pressure, obviously. We told her we don’t want her worrying her pretty little head about such big issues that we can sort out for her. That’s what men are for, we explained to her.

“The fellas also told Amelia that if she does run for Kooyong she’ll be rolling the dice on her current career as a …. housewife? Secretary? Checkout chick? Maybe a nurse? Not sure what she does for a living to be honest.

“We did say that if she did make way for Josh she’d be considered favourably for another  important party position, maybe even president of the ladies auxiliary – the mob that does the catering at all our big important meetings.

“She’d be in charge of making sure the womenfolk bring a plate to the meetings where their hubbies make all the big decisions about the party’s future,” the source said.

Ms Hamer said she had not been expecting Sky News “after dark” commentator and columnist for The Australian, Peta Credlin, (below) to be at the meeting.

“It was quickly explained to me that as a Murdoch media far-right commentator Ms Credlin is an ex-officio member of any Liberal Party committee,” Ms Hamer said.

“It was nice at first to see at least one other woman in the room. But that feeling didn’t last long once Peta bellowed at me that not standing aside for Josh was a clear case of antisemitism,” Ms Hamer said.
