I’m excited to report exclusively that US character actor Austin Pendleton has been signed to play federal immigration minister Andrew Giles in a snap six-part Netflix series on Giles’s ministerial career.
Perhaps using the word ‘signed’ is now a bit outdated as I understand shooting has already commenced (above), given that the Australian mainstream media has now declared Giles as “embattled”, meaning the MSM hopes he will be walking the ministerial plank much sooner than expected.
Pendelton, of course, is the wonderful actor who stole every scene he was in in 1992’s My Cousin Vinny, playing the bumbling defence lawyer John Gibbons.
I spoke to the Ohio-born actor earlier this morning from California and he said it would be an absolute honour to be playing Giles.
“When my agent told me about the project and sent me some images, I couldn’t believe how much alike physically the minister and I are.
“I stand ready to take on this role. Giles does look dim-witted and if I’m completely honest a little simple-minded. Is he?
“Does he stutter? I’d love nothing better than to basically reprise my character from My Cousin Vinny and I think the little lapse into stuttering in those court-room scenes sealed the audience’s love of the basically flawed and totally incompetent Gibbons character.
“I’m looking forward to doing just as professional a job on your Mr Giles.”
The six-part series, Goofy Giles, streams on Netflix from mid-June regardless of whether or not Andrew Giles is still in federal Cabinet by then.
