Rinehart snookers NGA

AUSTRALIAN ART:

Australia’s richest woman, WA mining magnate Gina Rinehart, has made what she claims is “an irresistible” offer to the National Gallery of Australia to replace its controversial Vincent  Namatjira portrait of her.

Ms Rinehart said she had commissioned a new portrait of her (main picture) which she had now offered free of charge to the NGA on the condition it removes the Namatjira work. (below)

“I believe this is a fair and reasonable deal and should prove irresistible to the NGA,” Ms Rinehart said while visiting one of her mines. (below)

“The new portrait I commissioned is a far more accurate representation of me. I believe it deserves to hang in the nation’s flagship gallery to enable visitors to see what I really look like, and not to be misled by the current portrait now hanging there.”

When questioned, Ms Rinehart was reluctant to name the artist she had commissioned to produce the new proposed replacement portrait.

She finally did reveal the artist as 93-year old Italian amateur Cecilia Gimenez, best known for her efforts in 2012 to restore a 19th century portrait of Jesus Christ in her local village church. (below)

When asked what she would do if the NGA rejected her offer, Ms Rinehart said she had a simple solution to resolve any impasse.

“I’ll just buy the gallery,” she said.
