BRISBANE: Near identical twins Macca and Gazza Canavan (above left) have been killed while attempting the first ever fly-under of the city’s famed Story Bridge using state-of-the-art wingsuit technology.
The first-time dare devils were striving to emulate skydivers Marco Fürst and Marco Waltenspiel (no relation) who some days back become the first to fly in wingsuits through London’s historic Tower Bridge, reaching a top speed of 246 kph.
In their local re-enactment using hired wingsuits from a city toy and novelty store, Gazza was the first to die after they left Archerfield aerodrome, plummeting to his death at Luggage Point near the mouth of the Brisbane River after he forgot to tie on his wingsuit as he and his brother exited their hired Cessna 172.
Macca actually made it to the bridge, successfully avoiding a massive dredge (above right) under the famous city landmark before smashing into the eastbound River CityCat service, damaged so badly that it had to terminate its service at Sydney Street, New Farm.
Families of the Canavan brothers, not-too-distant cousins of Queensland Nationals Senator and coalminer Matt Canavan, have yet to announce funeral arrangements for these two exceptionally brave if arguably very stupid men.
