Controversy dogs Sydney show

DOG BREEDING:

Controversy has erupted over a new dog breed set to take centre stage at what’s regarded as Australia’s most prestigious dog show starting in Sydney today.

Judges at the annual event held in conjunction with the Royal Easter Show are already split on the inclusion for the first time of a dedicated section for “oodles” – cross-bred strains created by matching poodles with other breeds. (below)

Some judges believe the new section has no place in what is meant to be a purebred showcase while others say the new oodle classification simply recognises the popularity of now common breeds such as cavoodles (a Cavalier King Charles spaniel/poodle mix), labradoodles (labrador/poodle ), and groodles (golden retriever/poodle).

But most agree that one particular oodle variety should be barred from competition until further investigations can he be held into its breeding history.

“We are all pretty concerned about the new ‘coryoodle’ (main picture) that apparently originated in South Australia,” one judge told The Bug on condition of anonymity.

“The coryoodle first began appearing in mid-February in 2018 so, given the average 65-day gestation period for most dog types, initial legal breeding would have started in early December 2017.

“Some judges think oodles in general should not be raised to the level of purebreds at show’s like ours, while others believe we need to move with the times and accept that they deserve to compete simply because they are so popular.

“But in the case of the coryoodle I’ve found judges here are unanimous that we should not accept it into competition, mainly because it just looks so fucking creepy.

“Plus it has great difficulty competing in the agility section where it tends to run off to the right and keeps on going,” the unnamed judge said.
