Olympic plans face more cuts

2032 BRISBANE OLYMPICS:

Queensland Premier Steven Miles says he has more plans to rein in spending on the Brisbane Olympic Games following his decision against building a massive new stadium for the 2032 event.

“Since taking that decision we’ve had a look at our projected costings and found more areas where we can make savings,” Mr Miles said.

“For instance, we see no need to spend any money on developing a new mascot for the Games.

“Because we will be re-using the old 1982 Commonwealth Games site for an athletics stadium, we figure we should just recycle the 1982 Games mascot, the giant mobile, winking kangaroo Matilda which is now located at a service station near Gympie. (main picture)

“So that will save lots of money. But wait, there’s more!

“Having decided to embrace Matilda for the 2032 Olympics we see no reason we can’t save money shifting Matilda to Brisbane by holding the opening and closing ceremonies at the Gympie servo instead of at the existing Lang Park stadium in Brisbane,” Mr Miles said.

“There’s plenty of room there so anyone heading to the opening or closing ceremony can bring a blanket and a picnic basket and enjoy the show, or the servo has a roadhouse cafe so we won’t have to enter into any expensive catering contract,” Mr Miles said.

Opposition Leader David Crisafulli said the LNP had no fixed position on the Premier’s latest plans for the Games but would review them once they won office, provided that was prior to the 2032 Games.
