BORDER SECURITY:
Following a week in which the Coalition parties again attacked the Albanese Government’s handling of immigration and border security, Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has today been handed another political free kick with the arrival in north-west Western Australia of a boatload of six undocumented men claiming to have sailed from the Middle East.
A spokesperson for Australian Border Force (ABF) said five men and their apparent ringleader (centre in main picture supplied by ABF) had been found several kilometres offshore from the remote WA town of Broome.
“To be accurate, the boat carrying the men was located well offshore by a Border Force patrol boat,” the ABF spokesperson said.
“When the ABF intercepted them, the bloke who seems to be the leader of the group threw himself overboard and walked briskly ashore and was apprehended on the Broome beachfront.
“All of the men have been taken to Broome police station for questioning. It’s slow going because a translator fluent in Aramaic has yet to be located and flown to Broome.
“The men all appear to be in good health and seem to have had plenty of food on their very long journey.
“One of them indicated that the leader of the group had kept them well fed by providing more than an adequate amount of loaves and fishes and had turned water into wine which they all seemed to enjoy even though it was a bit salty,” the Border Force spokesperson said.
Mr Dutton said he had been advised that five of the men had sought asylum in Australia while the leader of the group had indicated he would apply for entry under the skilled migration scheme after claiming to be a carpenter
“But we need to say ‘no’ to all of their demands, especially the ringleader,” he said.
“I understand that he has told Border Force that it’s not the first time he’s come here, and that it’s his second coming.
“Well, we just don’t want that type of hardened offender in our country. This ringleader and the other five should be put back into their boat, turned around, pushed out to sea and sent packing back to wherever they came from.”
Mr Dutton said the arrival of the men showed the Albanese Government was failing to keep Australia safe.
He conceded that the boat’s arrival would help him politically as he continued to pursue the government on immigration and border security issues.
“Well, you could say it certainly is a good Friday,” he said while either breaking out into a smile or simply baring his teeth, hard to tell.
