Ex-NRL star urges action

SOCIAL MEDIA:

Former rugby league star Todd Carney (inset main picture) has appealed to the Albanese Government to move quickly to declare if it plans to restrict or ban social media platform Tik Tok and other Chinese-backed apps.

Mr Carney said ongoing uncertainty about the government’s attitude to the Chinese apps was ruining his own recently launched online subscription venture.

“I’ve invested a lot of money in my new social media app and I don’t want to see it all pissed up against the wall,” Mr Carney said.

“I have put in a lot of hard work to establish my Wee Chat service which enables users with a shared interest in a very niche aspect of recycling to make contact, swap information, and meet up if they so desire.

“But my business has been drastically impacted by ongoing speculation about the future of apps like Tik Tok and another Chinese social media and messaging app with a name very similar to my own service.

“It’s just bad for business. People are not signing up to my app for fear it’s about to be banned.

“I can only hope that the Albanese Government clarifies its position very soon, otherwise I’ll have to shut up shop.

“If that happens I’m not sure what I’ll do. Probably head to the bathroom and hit the piss something awful,” he said.
