WASHINGTON DC: The White House is playing down logistical changes it has made to assist President Joe Biden deliver his annual State of the Union address today.
A White House source denied the new arrangements were aimed at minimising the risk of gaffes or mishaps in the face of an increasing focus by the media on the President’s age.
One such change was viewed by the White House press pool when Mr Biden was seen being transported from the White House to Capitol Hill for his speech on a forklift. (main picture)
“Having the President ride a forklift to the Capitol and then being driven rather than walking down the aisle of the House of Representatives to the podium to deliver his speech is purely a time-saving device,” a White House insider said.
“Similarly, the decision not to have him stand for the duration of his speech but to have him seated at the podium on a commode is purely a matter of his personal comfort.
“Also, we are merely responding to public demand by reducing the length of his State of the Union speech.
“We think he can still say a lot of important things in four minutes,” the insider said.
As Mr Biden was forklifted through the White House grounds, reporters took the opportunity to ask him what he thought of the “Super Tuesday” primary elections for the both the Democratic and Republican parties held this week.
“Oh yeah it’s nice,” he said. “I look forward to having soup on Tuesday. This week is was chicken, I think.”
