ASIO ALLEGATIONS:
Former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says he saw no evidence of spying by any MP while he served in the Australian Parliament.
Mr Turnbull spoke in Canberra today at a regular gathering in Parliament House of ex-MPs from the Turnbull era (main picture) coincidentally held just days after ASIO Director-General, Mike Burgess, revealed that a former federal MP had been recruited by a network of foreign spies operating in Australia.
“I am speaking out because Mr Burgess has suggested that the unidentified former politician had suggested to his foreign handlers the idea of involving a prime minister’s family member into the spies’ activities and my son Alex suspects it might have been him,” he said.
“But fortunately, as everyone knows full well, I am a very, very astute political operator.
“As revealed in the ABC’s recent Nemesis series – mainly by me – my political judgement has always been of the highest order.
“Some of those involved in the Nemesis series – largely me – went as far as to suggest I was a political genius.
“So if anyone was up to anything untoward while I was an MP, minister, or even as prime minister, then I would have known about it.
“If that had occurred I would have immediately imposed a spying ban similar to the so-called bonking ban which, as we all know, has put an end to sexual misbehaviour entirely and forever among federal politicians,” Mr Turnbull said.
