Veteran Nine News Queensland weatherman Garry Youngberry has scoffed at rumours his job is on the line following standout performances by his female standins during the silly season.
“Look, I’ll be the first to admit the likes of Lily Greer and Bronte Gildea have done a mighty job in my absence. It’s multi-skilling of a high professional standard like this that has made our 6pm news bulletin the Sunshine State’s favourite news source.
“But the skills I have acquired over 16 years facing the weather board in the studio and also in live crosses from weather disaster spots should never be discounted. I’m perfectly confident in Nine management’s faith in me.”
But Youngberry seemed momentarily shocked when we asked why he has been secretly taping practice weather reports in fresh outfits mimicking those worn by Greer and Gildea over recent days (at top and below right).

I told my dear friend that courtesy of a phone call from one of my Nine usually reliable insider contacts, I had been on hand at Brisbane’s South Bank to watch his taping in a fetching pink outfit very similar to the one Greer had worn for her weather report the other night.
“Look, the one that worries … I mean impresses …. me the most is Lily. It’s just fortunate that I also love pink. Let’s drink a drink a drink to Lily the pink, hey!
“And, sure everyone needs to adapt or die in any job and that pressure is no higher than in the cut-throat world of commercial television news and current affairs.”
Youngberry admitted that he had spent a fair bit of his leave using a small all-male camera and sound crew to recreate some of his colleagues’ weather reports.
“It’s just a harmless little portfolio of presentation alternatives – some with wigs, some without; some outfits just a little bit cocktaily perhhaps and revealing just a teasing hint of decolletage – to present to Nine News management in the very unlikely case that these rumours about my future have any substance whatsoever.
“Just hedging my bets, I guess. I do love this job.”
