Happy nuclear year

Our Media Glass House researchers have on numerous previous occasions showcased efforts by the Liberal Party’s advertising agency to publicise the party’s efforts to promote nuclear energy as a solution to the climate crisis.

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has embraced the divisive (what else?) idea to establish expensive nuclear power stations across the land instead of embracing cheaper and clean- yet so very woke – renewable power sources.

The News Crap Australia agency has been quick off the mark in 2024 to keep up its campaign on behalf of the Liberal Party.

Just before the end of 2023 it ran a front-page advertisement, sorry … “news story” trumpeting nuclear energy by right-wing favourite Peter Costello. (below)

Then this week they placed another Liberal Party advertisement, oops … “story” on its front page which spilled into an large portion of an inside news page. (below)

Of course like almost every story that appears in the national turdbloid both were badged as “exclusive”.

Our MGH teams thought that description was a bit much given that the story is based in large part on comments from “US electrics giant” Westinghouse that Australia needs to move quickly to start building nuclear microreactors – the very type being proposed by the nation’s alternative government.

So, as our researchers point out, The Oz runs a story saying we need to move urgently to buy nuclear microreactors –  a story based on the urgings of the very people selling them.

Does the story deserve the “exclusive” banner?

It might surprise readers to know that our MGH teams think that in many ways the answer is “yes”.

They reason that no other news outlet in the nation so blatantly campaigns for one side of politics.

So, yes, The Oz stories deserve the “exclusive” description.

Speaking of blatant advertising badged as a “news story”, News Crap Australia turdbloids were running an item this week about a new program line-up on pay TV network Sky TV. (below)

As always, it contains not one word about the corporate link between Sky TV and the News Crap Australia outlets in which it appeared.

They really do need to start referring to their editorial content as “News stories” rather than “news stories”, suggest our MGH teams.

The new line-up spruiked in the free ad for Sky includes a “debate” show that sounds a lot like a right-wing Q&A.

Called The Jury, we are told in the story it is designed to “combat political correctness, give ordinary Aussies a voice, and revive the art of disagreement”.

It will invite two guests to debate “a range of hot-button issues” such as the cost of living and – of course – nuclear power as well as gender identity and censorship. All good right-wing hobby horses.

It will be filmed in front of a live audience that includes a “jury” of 12 “everyday Aussies” who will pass judgement on the subject at hand.

But wait, there’s more. And by more, we mean more right-wing content.

The show will also feature appearances by “experts” and regular (right-wing) Sky News presenters.

Our MGH researchers suggest that rather than an enlightening and civilised debate on issues of concern, The Jury is most likely to be a right-wing forum using right-wing commentators to reinforce right-wing views of right-wing viewers while stoking right-wing outrage. In other words, perfect Sky content.
