Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has been arrested at a protest outside a Woolworths supermarket in Sydney this morning. (main picture)
Mr Dutton was leading a group of protestors outside the Woolworths supermarket in George Street in the Sydney CBD who were attempting to enforce a boycott of the store by blocking access to it.
The Bug’s Sydney police reporter said Mr Dutton and his associates arrived before opening time.
Mr Dutton then used a megaphone to address the protestors and a gathering crowd, saying the boycott was necessary to force Woolworths to stock cheap and tacky Australia Day merchandise.
Referring to the retail chain as “Woolwokes” he whipped the crowd into a frenzy which resulted in some protestors smashing the supermarket’s front windows.
Mr Dutton then ordered protestors to join hands to prevent customers entering the supermarket.
Store management called police who arrived to a hostile reception.
“Come and get us coppers! You pigs won’t stop us,” Mr Dutton yelled at them through his megaphone.
Mr Dutton then began leading a chant. “What do we want?” he yelled, with protestors responding: “Chinese-made thongs, towels, and other shitty trinkets for Australia Day.”
“When do we want them?” Mr Dutton continued.
The crowd replied: “Now, although buying after Australia Day means you’ll save a lot because of cheaper prices on unsold stock which can be put away and used next year.”
Police then moved in and arrested Mr Dutton who is due to appear in court later today.
As he was dragged away, it became clear his only footwear was a pair of thongs similar to these made in the Chinese city of Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! Oi! Oi! Oi!
