AMERICAN DIPLOMACY:

The US Air Force is rushing boxes of live crickets to the Middle East to support Secretary of State Antony Blinken in his current and future talks with regional leaders about the war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas.

A Pentagon spokesperson said the boxes had been loaded on C-130 Hercules freighter aircraft (main picture) at US military bases around the Mediterranean to be flown ahead of Mr Blinken wherever he travels for discussions with Middle East leaders.

“The war in Gaza, like most issues in the Middle East is very complex,” the Pentagon spokesperson said.

“The Secretary of State is accustomed to explaining America’s position which usually consists entirely of repeating that Israel has a right to defend itself, over and over again.

“In the current conflict, however, world opinion is clearly swinging in favour of a ceasefire  sparked by the huge death toll of innocent Palestinians caused by Israel’s military tactics.

“Mr Blinken has accommodated that shift somewhat by responding to journalists’ questions at recent news conferences by stating that the death toll is too high.

“But when asked to say specifically what the US is doing about it, he has no answer.

“That’s where the crickets come in. Whenever he gets that question in the future he can simply vacate the lectern and leave a box of crickets in his place.

“The Biden administration hopes this initiative will allay concerns about its diplomatic posture in the region,” the spokesperson said.
