Abetz’s family planning

THE MONARCHY:

Former Liberal Party senator for Tasmania and now campaign chair for the Australian Monarchists’ League, Eric Abetz, has proposed a radical plan which he says will “cement the monarchy in Australian life forever”.

Speaking to reporters at his Hobart home where he is still in the early stages of a self-imposed period of mourning for the late Queen Elizabeth II (main picture), Mr Abetz said the announced abdication of Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II was an opportunity to end any chance ever of an Australian republic.

The former high-profile Liberal Party federal minister said despite his proposed new plan he remained a devoted monarchist.

“Evidence of that is the fact that I set myself a 70-month period of mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth when she passed – one month for every year of her reign – and I’ll complete that about half-way through 2028,” he said.

“But the coming accession to the Danish throne of King Frederik and his Tasmanian-born Queen Consort Mary changes things a lot.

“It’s why I am now advocating that Australia continues as a constitutional monarchy but dumps the House of Windsor and adopts the House of Glucksborg of Denmark as our new royal family.

“Nothing personal. I remain a big fan of His Majesty King Charles III and his entire royal family.

“The Windsors are lovely people, with two possible exceptions. I mean, how could they not be? After all, like me, they’re descended from a family of Germans.

“But Princess Mary will be the only Australian ever to achieve such an exalted royal position as queen consort.

“This development opens the way for other Australians to follow if we adopt the Danish royal family as our own.

“For instance, because every Tasmanian like me will be related to Princess Mary in some way, everyone in this state alone will be in line to the Danish throne so they’ll have a vested interest in keeping the monarchy.

“By switching royal families we can cement the monarchy in Australian life forever.”

Mr Abetz admitted he had checked his own status as heir to the Danish throne and revealed he was currently 321,643rd in line.
