AOTY AWARD 2023:
Nominations are now open for The Bug’s Australian of the Year Award (AOTY) for 2023.
Chair of the judging panel, The Bug’s investment columnist Morrie Bezzle, urged readers to lodge nominations for the prestigious award whose winner would be announced on Australinvasion Day next year.
Speaking outside the Federal Court in Brisbane where he was appearing on a range of tax-avoidance charges (below), Mr Bezzle said judges traditionally had a tough job deciding a winner each year.

“The Bug first took the initiative to establish the award to recognise the Australian of the Year for 2018 and has since recognised a range of true blue Aussie heroes. (below)
“The inaugural gong for the Australian of the Year 2018 went to a good friend, business associate, and mentor of mine, Clive Palmer,” Mr Bezzle said.

“The deciding factor for judges that year was not so much big Clive’s business activities but his charitable work supporting News Crap Australia publications through advertising for his United Australia Party which he continues to this day.
“For 2019 we gave the award to teenage environmental activist Scomo Turdberg for her unique approach advocating for climate change by backing the wider use of coal and other fossil fuels.
“As she explained, using up all the fossil fuel in the world is the best way to eliminate it. You can’t argue with that logic, I reckon.
“For 2020 there was no risk that National Party Senator Bridget McKenzie wouldn’t get the gong for introducing innovative funding distribution models in the former Morrison Government,
“News Crap Australia commentator James Morrow for his services to political fiction and comedy writing was also a cert for 2021 and for 2022 judges made the decision to give Scott Morrison six AOTY awards for his work as prime minister as well as for the five other ministries he assumed during the later stages of his government.”
Mr Bezzle said he was looking forward to announcing the winner of The Bug’s sixth Australian of the Year Award on 26 January next year.
“Of course that will depend on any pending court appearances or the granting of bail if required,” he said.
