US tech billionaire Elon Musk (main picture) says his Telsa electric vehicle company will withdraw from the US government’s statutory national recall program aimed at protecting consumers from risky products.
Mr Musk said he would be substituting his own program to replace government-backed consumer protection efforts that recently caused more than two million Tesla cars –almost all of the cars it has sold in the US – recalled to check a risk associated with their autopilot software.
“As a free market advocate, a libertarian Republican, and a free speech absolutist, I see no need for the government to be involved in consumer protection,” he said.
“I believe such protections should be delivered by the free market and as such I will be establishing my own GFY consumer protection scheme within Tesla.
“I acknowledge that the GFY program will add an extra thousand dollars or so to each Tesla sold, but I think it will be worth it.”
Mr Musk explained that the GFY program – an acronym for “go fuck yourself” – will consist entirely of a dedicated phone line that Tesla owners could call if they were concerned about a consumer safety issue.
“When they ring, they’ll be immediately put through to a recorded message telling them to go fuck themselves and advising that they should get off their own fat ass and fix the problem themselves,” he said.
“This is a brilliant idea, if I may say so, and fits perfectly with my and Tesla’s business model,” Mr Musk said.
