Brisbane pair’s big small business

SMALL BUSINESS:

A Brisbane couple has celebrated a bumper first year for their home-based business which requires them to do nothing but receive material sent to them by politicians, sports stars, celebrities, and others in the public eye.

Brenda and Doug Court (main picture) said although of retirement age both had felt the need to continue working and last year explored the idea of establishing their own home-based small business.

“We couldn’t work out exactly what our new business might be until we were watching the TV news one night,” Mr Court explained.

“It was something a TV reporter said at the end of a story on some disturbing allegations made against a local politician that caused Brenda and I to look at each other and say: ‘That’s it!’

“We then put the word out as far and wide as possible to let those who may need our services that we were open for business.”

Mrs Court said the couple’s business model was deceptively simple but had proved very lucrative.

“All we do is sit at home and wait for politicians or others under pressure to comment on any scandalous event or activities involving them or allegations levelled against them.

“They usually send us a letter outlining the particular issues involved which we don’t even open.

“But having received the material the politician or celebrity can legitimately tell the media that they won’t comment because ‘the matter is before the Courts’,” she said.

Mr and Mrs Court would not disclose the fees they charge for their services but said “business is booming”.

“We get material every day,” Mrs Court said. “A lot is from politicians, a lot from high-profile celebrities, and plenty from the Catholic Church, but the big market for us is sports stars – mainly male footballers of any code.

“We get quite a few of those every day,” she said. “Quite a few.”
