Dutton assumes Dodson’s role

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has put himself forward as the natural heir to outgoing WA Labor Party Senator Pat Dodson.

At a news conference in Canberra this morning (main picture) the day after Senator Dodson made his last speech to the Senate, Mr Dutton said he was ideally placed to carry on the work of the indigenous leader who has often been referred to as the Father of Reconciliation.

“I’m the perfect person to take up the torch Senator Dodson has left behind,” Mr Dutton said.

“I would like nothing more than to embrace that torch and wreck conciliation.”

But Mr Dutton said he disagreed with one aspect of Senator Dodson’s speech.

In his valedictory speech Senator Dodson said in the wake of the defeat of the referendum on a First Nations’ voice to federal parliament Australians faced the choice of either working in a positive way towards positive outcomes or wallowing in disagreement, division, discord and hatred.

“I believe we can do both,” Mr Dutton said. “And I prove that every day by my own actions.

“Each morning I wake up and commit myself to positively working on disagreement and division and discord and hatred.”
