THE MIDDLE EAST:
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says he will send every resident of southern Gaza a personal message once the extended truce in the war against Hamas ends in a few days.
Mr Netanyahu said he welcomed the announced extension of the truce which would give him more time to finish writing individual notes to Gaza’s 2.4 million residents now crammed into the bottom half of the Palestinian enclave for delivery by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). (main picture)
“My messages set out my desire to see all Gazans in pieces, … I mean living in peace,” he said. “Especially in the southern half of Gaza where our valiant peace-making efforts are far from finished.
“I’m insisting that my messages be delivered as speedily as possible once the truce ends.
“The IDF has the capabilities to do that which is why I have insisted that they be involved and are ready to distribute my messages using the fastest and most direct method available to them.
“Our IDF leaders assure me that as soon as the truce ends, thousands of my messages will be landing at the front door – well, where front doors still exist – of every home in southern Gaza.
“I am very excited to be able to communicate directly with the men, women, and children currently alive… I mean currently living in southern Gaza… where our messages of peace that have been so effectively delivered across the top half of the Gaza Strip can be similarly delivered further south without putting any IDF troops in harm’s way, which has always been central to our ongoing mission – our right – to defend ourselves.
“To make sure all of them get my messages of hope that they all show good sense and move to Egypt and their new Palestinian homeland as quickly as possible, I’ll be asking the IDF to also send them to every hospital, school, kindergarten, old people’s home, mosque, marketplace – in fact to every single building still standing in what is currently southern Gaza,” Mr Netanyahu said.
