RSPCA cautions Dutton

RSPCA Australia has urged federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton to implement a risk-management plan to guarantee animal welfare at his public appearances.

Spokesperson for RSPCA Australia, Sam Oyed, said it would not hesitate to recommend that Mr Dutton and the federal Liberal Party be charged under animal protection laws if they did not take action to address the society’s concerns.

“Our members have been very upset by incidents at public events and news conferences attended by Mr Dutton,” Mr Oyed said.

“We have observed dozens, sometimes hundreds, of dogs gathering at those events as soon as Mr Dutton begins speaking. (main picture)

“This occurred most recently at his news conference this week dealing with background checks applied to Palestinian people granted visitor visas to come to Australia after fleeing the war in Gaza.

“This was just one of many such incidents in which dogs of all sorts descend on Mr Dutton from surrounding areas whenever he speaks at any public appearance.

“If he is attracting them then he and the Liberal Party need to take responsibility for their welfare.

“That includes ensuring they return home safely to their owners as well as feeding and caring for them and guaranteeing their safety while they are at any event where Mr Dutton appears.

“They have no excuse. It’s not as if Mr Dutton and Liberal Party officials have been unaware of these incidents.

“They have been occurring for some years now but have become more common since Mr Dutton assumed the Liberal leadership after the 2022 federal election,” Mr Oyed said.
