BUSINESS:
A dark horse candidate has emerged as the frontrunner to replace Kelly Bayer Rosmarin as CEO of troubled national telecommunications company Optus.
Little known Chinese-born executive Hua Wei (main picture) is being mentioned as the most likely successor to Ms Bayer Rosmarin who quit yesterday after spending almost a fortnight defending her handling of the national Optus network outage.
Industry observers say Mr Hua, currently based in Beijing, has always maintained a low profile as CEO of the Red Ah Mee mobile phone company.
“Despite that, he has been very diligent in expanding his company’s reach and has big, if largely secret, plans to penetrate overseas markets, especially Taiwan,” one telco executive who wished to remain alive told The Bug.
“I understand his plans involve unique methods of establishing a footprint in Taiwan including the use of missiles and military-style jets to deliver fibre-optic broadband cables to the island nation east of mainland China.”
However, the same anonymous executive would not rule out other contenders.
“There’s certainly also talk within the industry of replacing Ms Bayer Rosmarin with another woman currently between jobs and living in Ireland,” he said.
“I don’t know much about Joyce Alan (below) but I understand she has a background in aviation and has told colleagues that she would love to live and work in Australia.
“Apparently she has been very vocal in spruiking her CV and has been stressing her on-the-ground skills in running airlines which, come to think of it, does sound counter-intuitive doesn’t it?”
