How the Tele spiked its scoop

MEDIA NEWS:

Confusion at senior editorial levels of News Crap Australia’s Sydney turdbloid The Daily Telegraph has been revealed as the reason the Murdoch-owned newspaper missed the chance to publish early and exclusively a report detailing the reasons behind the NSW Liberal Party’s failure to win office at the March state election.

A News Crap Australia insider said the top-secret internal Liberal Party report was made available to The Daily Telegraph well ahead of other publications, including the News Crap Australia broadhsit The Australian.

“The Tele was given the key findings of the election autopsy at least a week before the Liberal Party’s state executive got to see it last Friday night, but dropped the ball badly,” the source said.

“The Tele was actually in possession of the key findings days ahead of The Oz which ended up publishing its own ‘exclusive’ online report last Friday night ahead of the Libs’ executive meeting.”

The source said the gist of the information given in advance to The Daily Telegraph summarising the internal Liberal Party report’s findings included:

  • techniques from the early 2000s had been used to reach an audience in the 2020s.
  • it had chased supporters who no longer shape politics – older conservatives who helped keep John Howard prime minister from 1996 to 2007,
  • it offered no particular solutions to cohorts including renters, young women, multi-faith and multicultural communities,
  • it paid insufficient attention to the impact of generational change and continued to assume that younger cohorts would in time become more interested in its right-wing values.

“The report basically said the Howard era was dead and more people are now more interested in social tolerance and leaders from the digital era, not print,” the News Crap Australia source said.

The Daily Tele’s editor Ben English was briefed on those findings but mistook them as findings about News Crap Australia itself and spiked the story then and there.

“I guess you can understand his confusion, given that it was a report on the Liberal Party which is barely distinguishable from News Crap Australia itself, especially the Daily Tele.

“I mean, if you read the key findings you can substitute News Crap Australia for the NSW Liberal Party and they all still ring true,” the source said.
