Dutton doubles down

Opposition Leader Peter Dutton has doubled down on claims that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is failing to tackle antisemitism in Australia in the wake of the war in Gaza.

Mr Dutton this morning called his second news conference in two days at Parliament House in Canberra to step up his attack on the PM by accusing Mr Albanese himself of being antisemitic.

His claims follow the motion he moved in federal parliament yesterday linking a rise in antisemitic incidents evident since the start of the Israel/Hamas war to alleged risks to the Australian community flowing from the High Court’s decision effectively releasing all asylum seekers held in indefinite detention.

“Oy vey, the PM is just meshuggeneh to begin kvetching about my motion in the parliament yesterday,” he began after indicating that reporters should now refer to him as Rabbi Dutton.

“Given my deep faith it is only logical that by attacking me in parliament he is clearly being antisemitic himself.”

Reporters then quizzed Rabbi Dutton on the motives behind his Wednesday motion and asked whether it was just more race-based dog whistling.

“The feedback I have received since yesterday has convinced me that I did the white thing and that I was on the white path with my motion,” he said while snacking on a bagel with lox and cream cheese.

“I stand by my motion and call on the PM to stop all of his schleping around the world schmoozing with foreign – I repeat, FOREIGN! – leaders.”

Rabbi Dutton said the PM’s presence was needed in Australia to ease community tensions and concerns in the wake of the High Court’s decision.

“He should stay home and deal with the thousands of murderers and rapists whose cells he has personally unlocked and set free while actively encouraging them to go out and murder and rape innocent Australians,” he said.

“In fact they are probably right now murdering and raping innocent Australians as I speak. On Anthony Albanese’s direct and personal instructions!

“Oy vey! If ever there was evidence that he is failing to lower community tensions, that is it.”

The Opposition Leader then announced a sudden end to his news conference.

“I’m sorry I have to go,” Rabbi Dutton said. “I’m Jew,… I mean I’m due to give a major address to my chosen people in just a few minutes.

“Mazel tov! L’chaim!” he called to reporters as he left the news conference and headed to the Parliament House studio of Sky News.
