EDUCATION:
Malcolm Turnbull has been formally installed into his new position on the academic teaching staff of the Australian National University (ANU).
An ANU spokesperson said the former prime minister’s appearance yesterday at the National Press Club in Canberra was seen as the ideal opportunity to officially welcome him to the university’s senior academic ranks. (main picture)
“We were advised that Mr Turnbull…, sorry, I mean Professor Turnbull, was going to speak on various topics including the need to urgently address the nation’s housing affordability crisis,” the spokesperson said.
“Given that the trajectory of the current crisis was more than apparent when he was prime minister, the uni thought it appropriate to officially install Mr Turnbull as Professor of Rewriting History during his appearance at the Press Club.
“The uni hierarchy has been thinking of awarding the position to Mr Turnbull since he began supporting an indigenous voice to parliament by bemoaning misleading arguments used against it such as the misguided idea that a voice would somehow be a third chamber of parliament.
“His advocacy for renewable energy as a means to tackle climate change after having spent so much time in office deferring to sceptics – mainly in his own party and the Nationals – and never actually achieving a coherent energy policy is also evidence of his qualifications for his new post,” the spokesperson said.
The ANU spokesperson said Mr Turnbull’s first task as a new professor would be to deliver a public lecture next month outlining the significant initiatives and reforms he achieved as PM from 2015 to 2018.
“We think it will be a very popular lecture, mainly because it’ll be just the right length for a Tik Tok video,” he said.
