Ex-PM embraces Aboriginality

LYING RODENT:

Former prime minister John Howard (main picture) says he will now be embracing and immersing himself fully in Aboriginal culture after coming to a sudden realisation about his personal belief that immigrants should fit in with the dominant culture of their new home nation.

Mr Howard said his realisation came to him during a speech to the right-wing Alliance for Responsible Citizenship (ARC) in London this week. (below)

“Multiculturalism is a concept that I’ve always had trouble with,” he told the ARC audience.

“I take the view that if people want to emigrate to a country, then they adopt the values and practices of that country.

“And in return they’re entitled to have the host citizenry respect their culture without trying to create some kind of federation of tribes and culture – you get into terrible trouble with that.”

Speaking to The Bug’s London bureau after the event, Mr Howard said it had dawned on him as he spoke to the ARC audience that he himself was not embracing his own standards when it came to the attitude he expected immigrants to adopt.

“I suddenly realised that Captain Cook, the First Fleet, and every other vessel that sailed to Australia from England in the 18th and 19th centuries brought with them immigrants to a nation that was already inhabited by Aboriginal people,” he said.

“So there has always been an obligation on early settlers to fit in and adopt the values and practices of Aboriginal people. Logically the same obligation applied to their descendants, like me.

“That’s why I am declaring myself as a proud Farrightwing man and from this day forward I shall be adopting and advocating the values and practices of my people.”

Mr Howard then called a pause to the interview to allow him to perform a smoking ceremony and issue a welcome to country to The Bug’s reporter and photographer despite the fact he was 17,000 kms from his tribal lands.
