U.S. NEWS:
America’s politically powerful gun lobby group, the National Rifle Association (NRA), says it has responded quickly to news of the nation’s latest mass shooting.
Police in the US state of Maine say at least 18 people are dead after a gunman opened fire at a bowling alley and restaurant in the city of Lewiston on Wednesday.

In the wake of the latest mass shooting NRA chief executive Clint Face (left but also far right) said the organisation would provide its specialised T&P app for mobile devices free of charge to families of victims of the shooting.
“A few years ago the NRA began marketing our specialised app that was developed for us by Alabama-based IT firm Second Amendment Inc,” Mr Face said.
“We recognised that the regularity of mass shooting across the United States demanded a fast response by gun owners and those who are paid to represent them like my organisation and most of those in the US Congress and state legislatures.
“We knew that the first – often the only – action taken by those who defend the right to bear arms is to send their thoughts and prayers to those families whose lives have been permanently devastated by the killing of loved ones in a mass shooting.
“Given that these events happen so often we decided that what was needed is a social media app that could be loaded onto mobile devices so those who use it could deliver a rapid response to such incidents.
“The end result was our T&P app (main picture) that allows anyone with a mobile device to receive or send their thoughts and prayers to the families and friends of the victims of mass shootings.
“The app saves our members, other gun owners, and those in Congress a lot of time.
“But we also know that many family members of victims don’t have the app and couldn’t receive those thoughts and prayers.
“So we’ve decided to offer the families of the Maine victims access to our T&P app free of charge, saving them almost US60 cents each.
“We’ll be extending the same offer to all family members of victims of future mass shootings, probably starting from tomorrow,” Mr Face said.
