FEDERAL POLITICS:
Leaked footage of Peter Dutton mimicking Rolf Harris singing his most famous hit has further lifted the spirits of Opposition ranks here, already mightily buoyed by their big defeat of the Voice referendum.
The footage, believed to have been taken in an Opposition meeting room deep in the bowels of Parliament House late last night, shows Mr Dutton regaling senior shadow frontbenchers with his own version of Harris’s big 1963 hit, Tie Me Kangaroo Down, Sport (above).
Grabbing a wobble board and donning a fake white beard, Dutton elicits peals of laughter by repeating the lines Let me abos go loose. Bruce, let me abos go loose; they’re no more use, Bruce, let me abos go loose.
The footage shows National Party Leader David Littleproud and former leader Barnaby Joyce laughing so loud that the latter spilled some of his schooners of Bundy rum on Bundy rum rocks, one held in each hand.
In the background, Michaelia Cash and Sussan Ley can be seen dancing intimately because this goes with this and this goes with that, and Bridget McKenzie can be spotted firing off what we hope were a couple of shotgun blanks.
The Bug understands the impromptu song followed Mr Dutton’s public announcement that he was no longer interested in holding a second referendum to acknowledge the First Nations People in the Constitution. And, to be fair, why would you?
Another senior shadow minister explained: “Peter told us his heartfelt rendition of that famous song was his own special way of thanking the central role played by the two Aboriginals and senior LNP figures who spearheaded the successful No campaign against the Voice – Nyunggai Warren Mundine and Senator Jacinta Price.
“It was a lovely tribute seeing we’ll probably never hear from those two dar… those two coo…those two wonderful first nations people ever again.
“Oh, they might bang on for a bit about their belief that treaty, reparations and truth-telling had to come first before any Voice but who in the mainstream media is going to be remotely interested any more in what the fuck they have to say, eh?”
