THE VOICE REFERENDUM:
The National Press Club (NPC) in Canberra is investigating the apparently deliberate hacking of a TV feed from Broome featuring Aboriginal activist and Labor Party Senator for Western Australia, Pat Dodson.
Senator Dodson yesterday addressed the NPC from Broome where he was campaigning for the indigenous voice to parliament.
But a few minutes before the scheduled start of his address TV monitors at the NPC flickered into life with the image of a still-unidentified man who introduced himself as “Pet Duttson” which caused reporters assembled at the NPC in Canberra to mistake him for the WA senator. (main image)
Duttson began his address by yelling “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no” repeatedly for several minutes.
He then paused for a sip of water before again yelling “No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no” for several more minutes and then asking reporters if they had any questions.
A reporter in possession of an advance copy of the real Senator Dodson’s speech took the opportunity to ask Duttson about “his” comments claiming that “misinformation and racism” had been a feature of the referendum campaign, that “division and acrimony has crept into the debate”, and that “the nation is bogged down in division”.
In response Duttson profusely thanked the reporter for the compliment.
Another reporter then referenced comments made yesterday by leading “no” vote advocate Warren Mundine who said he would not rejoice if the referendum were defeated on Saturday but would call for Australians to “work together and move forward”.
Asked to comment on Mr Mundine’s remarks Duttson said: “Fuck that.”
He once again began yelling “No, no, no, no…” before the rogue broadcast was cut off when the real Senator Dodson appeared on the screen and began his address.
The NPC spokesperson said the club and Australian Federal Police were continuing to investigate the incident.
