VOICE REFERENDUM:
A Brisbane transgender activist is urging Australians to “think outside the square” when they cast their votes at the 14 October referendum on a First Nations’ voice to federal parliament.
Brush Turkey (main picture) said they were a big supporter of the voice and wanted to see the referendum succeed.
“I definitely want to see a voice for First Nations’ people enshrined in the constitution,” they said.
“But I also definitely and vehemently reject the concept of being limited to a binary choice.
“If the so-called ‘gender wars’ have taught us anything it’s that nothing can be nor should be reduced to a simplistic binary framework.
“That’s why I am campaigning against a simple ‘yes’ or ‘no’ vote.
“I am urging voters to reject a binary choice and not to simply vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’.
“Instead they should use the ballot paper to express their feelings in favour of a voice, perhaps through a short poem such as a haiku.
“They should also not be forced by the dominant patriarchal hegemony as embodied by the Australian Electoral Commission to write inside the boxes printed on the ballot paper.
“They should feel free to express themselves wherever they like on their ballot paper – to think outside the square, or rectangle as the case may be.
“I’ll be doing that to fully support the voice and I urge others to do the same,” they said.
