Palaszczuk scraps Australia Day

QUEENSLAND POLITICS:

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has announced the scrapping of the Australia Day public holiday that was due to be marked on Friday 26 January next year.

But the Premier has been quick to stress her decision has nothing to do with addressing opposition to the holiday from First Nations’ descendants and among the wider community.

“It’s definitely not about any anti-Australia Day sentiment in some quarters of the community,” she said.

“This decision is entirely about the miserable performance at the weekend by three supposedly powerhouse Queensland teams in the AFL, NRL, and NRLW grand finals.”

Standing in front of a bonfire of the three teams’ banners (main picture) the Premier said they had all been widely expected to win but hadn’t.

“So now there’s a price to pay,” she said.

“Just weeks ago everyone wanted a public holiday if the Matildas won the Football World Cup.

“They wanted a day off even though they hadn’t got off their fat arses to do anything to get the Matildas to the level they achieved on the tough World Cup ladder.

“Well, it cuts both ways. If the Matildas winning the World Cup deserved a public holiday, then the Brisbane Broncos, Brisbane Lions, and Gold Coast Titans’ NRLW team losing three grand finals in two days means everyone should lose a public holiday.

“That’s only fair,” Ms Palaszczuk said.

“This time next year if a Queensland team has won an AFL, AFLW, NRL, NRLW, A-League, or A-League Women’s premiership I’ll think about giving back the Australia Day holiday.

“But be warned. If none of them brings a premiership to Queensland I’ll be looking at some of the other public holidays on the calendar very, very closely,” she said.
