RESERVE BANK:
New Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) Governor, Michele Bullock, has taken indefinite sick leave just days after starting in the position this week.
Ms Bullock, who served as Assistant RBA Governor from 2010 to 2022 and then as deputy to Philip Lowe whose tenure was not renewed by the Albanese Government, began work at the central bank’s Sydney headquarters on Monday.
But a Reserve Bank source has revealed she had yesterday taken indefinite leave to recuperate from the sudden onset of a very painful and debilitating case of repetitive strain injury (RSI).
“I actually blame Philip [Lowe] for the fact Michele has had to take sick leave so soon,” an RBA insider told The Bug.
“She was a very loyal Assistant and Deputy Governor and while she never actively sought his job, I get the feeling that Phil thinks she might have been undermining him.
“Unfortunately Michele took Phil at his word when he told her that as RBA Governor it was her signature that would now be appearing on all Australian banknotes, but also that she needed to sign the notes herself individually.
“So that’s what she’s been doing since first thing Monday morning after she arranged for the Perth Mint to air freight a few pallets of new banknotes of all denominations to the RBA HQ.
“She sat down and started signing, breaking only for a few minutes to practise throwing the Governor’s official dart in preparation for her first RBA board meeting in early October to decide if the cash rate goes up, down, or stays where it is. (main picture)
“By Tuesday afternoon her right hand was buggered and she had to head home via her GP who prescribed some anti-inflammatory tablets and rest.
“Everyone at the bank wishes her well and we are all hoping her hand recovers in time for the board meeting.
“If she can’t hold the dart to throw at the dartboard the national economy and in particular mortgage holders could be in big trouble.
“I mean, that’s the RBA Governor’s main job. Only job, really,” the RBA insider said.
