The Republican Party Governor of the US state of South Dakota, Kristi Noem, has rejected criticism of her move to replace Thomas Jefferson with Donald Trump on the famous Mount Rushmore monument.
Ms Noem said she had personally ordered a gang of stonemasons and engineers to rework the existing Jefferson head next to George Washington’s on the popular tourist attraction to resemble Mr Trump. (main picture)
“They’ve worked hard for the past few days and I think the result speaks for itself,” she said.
Ms Noem (below with Donald Trump) said she had been inspired to make the change by the mugshot of Donald Trump taken at his recent appearance in a Georgia prison to be formally charged with a range of offences linked to his efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election results.

“As soon as I saw the photo I knew it was ideally suited to be on Mount Rushmore – one of my state’s biggest tourist drawcards,” the Governor said. “In fact it’s pretty much the only drawcard, to be honest.
“Sure, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln are all ex-presidents. But they’ve had the place to themselves for too long.
“They’ve been up there for more than 80 years so it’s time for someone new.
“I thought it’s time we updated Mount Rushmore to make it more relevant to today’s tourists.
“I mean, who remembers Jefferson? What did he ever do?
“Unlike Donald Trump he certainly never spoke out against tyrants trying to destroy our Constitution and democracy by stealing elections,” she said.
