Dutton doubles down

Opposition leader Peter Dutton has doubled down on his criticism of the voting rules for the upcoming referendum on the voice to federal parliament.

Mr Dutton recently attacked the rules laid down in legislation governing referendums for allowing ticks or crosses to be counted as a “yes” or “no” vote in some circumstances but not in others.

Mr Dutton alleged the Albanese Government was attempting to skew the referendum towards a  “yes” vote, prompting the Australian Electoral Commission to issue a strongly worded statement pointing out that the rules had been in referendum legislation for decades.

But Mr Dutton was unrepentant and called a news conference at his property at Dayboro north of Brisbane to step up his attacks.

On arrival reporters were handed updated official photographs of the Opposition Leader (main picture).

Questions to Mr Dutton’s staff by media representatives who had noticed the changed name of his property – now called “Mar-a-Lago” – went unanswered.

In his brief remarks Mr Dutton said it was clear the coming referendum would be “stolen” by “deep state” actors working for the “crooked” Albanese Government.

After he outlined his criticisms Mr Dutton did not stay for questions, instead saying as he left the room that those present were all representatives of “the fake news”.
