Running out of sight

The column that has fun with the smaller mistakes and missteps of Australia’s mainstream mediocre; that pays homage to those sweet little fishes that individually don’t amount to a full meal but collectively can cause a tummy upset over the overall state of the once great and noble craft of journalism in this country.

Once again we ask: Is anyone at the national broadshit The Australian checking its output before publication?

On Wednesday its hard-copy edition ran a story on the voice to parliament referendum and illustrated it with a picture taken during a community run aimed at promoting the “yes” side of the argument. (main picture)

Endurance runner Pat Farmer was there and, according to the pic caption, was “flanked by Anthony Albanese and Tanya Plibersek”. Only trouble was, he wasn’t.

The same question might be posed to The Guardian Australia which is running a story about the planned expansion of organic and green waste collection services in south-east Queensland. (below)

In it we are told that only “17% of Queenslanders who have a general kerbside service have an organics bin” and later that “organic waste such as food scraps makes up as much as half of all general kerbside waste”. Something doesn’t smell quite right there.

We salute Ellen Fanning, who presented last night’s ABC TV news out of Brisbane with the observation that Brisbane had “enjoyed a sparkling Spring day!”

Just short of a week too early, Ellen! Yes, we know, we are picky! But where would be the fun in not being that! Close, Ellen, but sadly no cigar.

Memo the Nine News Brisbane tyro who breathlessly told us the other night that the Gold Coast city councillor charged with murdering his step-father had been “appointed” to council.

We’re pretty sure he was elected a few years back. Always good as a journalist wanting to be their very best one day to use the right words, eh?
