ABC TV presenter Annabel Crabb remains in an induced coma in a Brisbane hospital with a suspected case of parasitic infection.
I understand that Ms Crabb was rushed to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) just hours after filming an episode of the ABC’s Kitchen Cabinet series in which she visits the homes of prominent politicians who prepare and then share a meal with her.
An ABC spokesperson told me that Ms Crabb had spent a day shooting an episode of the latest Kitchen Cabinet series at the Dayboro property of federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton north of Brisbane.
Mr Dutton prepared a meal for the two of them that consisted entirely of raw red meat, the spokesperson said. (main picture)
Unedited footage from Ms Crabb’s dinner-table interview with Mr Dutton showed him saying: “Raw red meat is my regular diet and reflects my approach to politics.
“I constantly look for ways to energise the Liberal Party’s base and metaphorically throwing them red meat is a sure-fire way to do that.
“On a personal level I’ve gone way beyond the metaphorical and now literally consume very little apart from red meat and raw red meat at that.
“In fact I can’t think of much else I have to eat each day apart from raw red meat.
“Even for breakfast I’ll have a raw t-bone steak or a handful of raw beef mince, sometimes with a couple of eggs – raw of course, and I don’t even break the shells,” Mr Dutton said as he tore apart a raw beef shank with his teeth.
The ABC spokesperson told me that Ms Crabb began to feel unwell on the return drive to Brisbane and the camera crew with her decided to detour to the RBWH.
“It was there that Annabel’s conditioned deteriorated and doctors diagnosed a possible case of toxoplasmosis which is an infection transmitted by parasites that can live in uncooked meat,” the spokesperson said.
“Doctors said her reaction to the infection was fairly mild and included a fever, swollen lymph nodes, and some slight muscle aches and pains.”
I asked the ABC spokesperson why doctors had placed Ms Crabb in an induced coma when she had experienced only a mild reaction.
“That wasn’t the doctors who did that,” the spokesperson explained. “Annabel herself asked to be put into a coma when she heard that Peter Dutton was on his way to Brisbane to visit her.”
