THE FOURTH ESTATE:
An unfortunate slip of the tongue has cost Channel 9 Brisbane newsreader Andrew Lofthouse his job.
The popular presenter was escorted from the station’s newsroom (above) as soon as last night’s 6pm bulletin ended, with Nine Entertainment Co. chair Peter Costello personally directing security staff to remove the veteran newsman for his on-air indiscretion.
Not long into the bulletin, as Lofthouse read out the introduction to a story on Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s visit to the Garma festival in the Northern Territory, the nation’s largest gathering of Aboriginals, the newsreader unfortunately said this: “Garma means a two-way learning process, an idea the Prime Minister needs to promote ahead of the Yes vote”.
A colleague of Lofthouse’s at the newsroom told The Bug a livid Costello rang producers almost immediately and in a profanity-laden outburst kept shouting “A Yes fucking vote! We can’t afford a Yes fucking vote!” and demanding that Lofthouse be sacked immediately.

“Get that stupid cunt out of my newsroom immediately! Why would he even want to hint at the prospect of a yes vote?
“Dutton [Opposition leader Peter Dutton] has got fuck all going for him and his only hope at the next election is to humiliate Albanese by wrecking the referendum’s chances no matter how poorly that makes us look internationally.
“What the fuck was Lofthouse thinking!”
