In the eyes of the rest of the world, what’s going to look worse for Australia if we vote down The Voice later this year? That we’re racist or that we’re just plain fucking stupid?
Not a nice choice, is it? And let’s not even entertain the prospect that the answer might be both. That’s too horrible to contemplate.
In a half-century’s interest in politics I don’t think I’ve ever heard arguments so bereft of logic, reason or decency than those being pedalled by the No people, aided and abetted by Newscorpse and others in the mainstream mediocre.
Their claims, based on a litany of lies and gross exaggerations, are almost entirely laughable and, yes, at their very core, they are inherently racist. Yet believe the poll trends and the chance of a Yes vote seems to be slipping away. If those polls are right, there’s not a single bridge left for sale anywhere in the world.
Let’s look at the arguments of two of the No case proponents, Tony Abbott and Sussan Ley.
Abbott is a borderline buffoon (okay, maybe that’s being too kind) and mental midget who thought giving an Australian knighthood to Prince Philip was a good idea.
His main argument is this: “Why should the Darkies that make up only 4 per cent of the Australian population get something that we Whiteies are not being offered!” Okay, I’m paraphrasing things a bit but not by much.
There’s almost a moral criminality to Abbott’s reasoning, one that totally ignores – either accidentally or wilfully – the unquestionable fact that our First Nations people are greatly disadvantaged compared with Abbott, his family and probably every non-aboriginal person he knows. How revoltingly base and offensive to decent, intelligent people is that pitch to the cookers, proud boys, far-right religious nutters, conspiracy theorists and sad sacks that life has passed by among us. Maybe we should at least applaud the ability of a former minister for aborigines to not blush while pushing that basic, racist Hansonesque nonsense.
You’d deadset swear he hasn’t read – he can read, right? – the most recent reports on the systemic failures on a number of fronts to close the gap on life markers between Aboriginal and Torres Strait people and all other Australians.
Memo to Tony Abbott: if your sales pitch is mainly to mindless, ignorant, racists, then you are a truly awful racist yourself. No ifs. No buts. If for some reason you don’t know or understand how fundamentally flawed your reasoning is, then you’re also an awfully ignorant cunt. If you know what you’re sprouting is top-grade bullshit but just don’t care, then you really are a wilfully awful cunt. That’s doublecunty.
Then there’s Sussan Ley, who made a complete fool of herself on ABC’s Insiders the other week. Ley claimed there were constitutional lawyers arguing that the Voice would lead to High Court challenges that would grind Oz to a halt, but couldn’t name one. She was then forced to suggest that the opinions of such experts were not the be all and end all of the debate anyway. Others are arguing No too!
If intelligence is directly related to the size of a person’s mouth, Ley is Mensa president material. Sadly, we are reminded each time she talks that the opposite is true.

Let’s remind ourselves that Abbott and Ley belong to a political party that thought it okay to support a Senate motion that white lives matter too. Anyone who doesn’t understand that #blacklivesmatter was a hashtag coined to highlight the great disparity – often lethal – suffered by black Americans at the hands of police and others in authority in the United States is a red-hot, redneck racist. Welcome to the racist club, all of you out there who thought #whitelivesmatter and #alllivesmatter make good sense. There’s a very solid chance you make Pauline Hanson look smart.
As stated above, I can’t think of any of the arguments – not one – being put forward by the No people that make any sense whatsoever. Their collective thoughts would be rightly laughed out of any debating forum at any high-school or college in Australia.
Our First Nations people won’t be able to demand us whities, yellowies and lighter brownies pay rent on our homes! Or that they must submit to a welcome to country the moment they step out of their front gate. That if they insist Australia Day, Anzac Day and Christmas Day be shifted, then shifted they must be. That every village, town and city in this great brown land of ours must now go by their original native monikers.
The Voice will only ever be able to provide advice to parliament and the executive on matters that affect them. The Voice will have no powers other than those of persuasion. Governments will not have to agree to things the Voice puts forward. That’s been set in stone for years for anyone wanting to know the facts about the Voice to Parliament. It’s only the No crowd muddying the waters for fuck-all and ephemeral political gain at the expense of this nation’s international reputation.
And so the No crowd keeps chanting there’s not enough information! Or too much! It’s a Canberra conjob by elitists! It’s Anthony Albanese’s idea and no-one else’s! A good idea maybe down the track but not now! If you don’t know, vote No! The Yes people are the true racists who have put forward a racist idea that is dividing the nation for no good reason!
For mine, any process that helps close the gap on life expectancy, health, employment, housing availability and other key life-marker issues is a no-brainer for anyone who has a brain. The Voice will be a welcome addition to existing avenues of advice to government by our First Nations people. The gap remains wide and no sensible, logical or fair-minded person would oppose a concept – one that originated from our First Nations people – that might, just might, see public money more effectively spent to address some terrible wrongs. Oh, and finally recognise our First Nations people in the Constitution. That would be nice. And long overdue.
The No arguments are as stupid and racist as Abbott and Ley are shown to be every time they open their racist and stupid gobs and pure unadulterated, fat-free, toxic bullshit oozes out.
