The Albanese Government says it is considering a proposal to use a new artificial intelligence system to recover overpayment from welfare recipients.
A spokesperson for the Department of Human Services confirmed that a submission put to payments agency Centrelink within the department was being favourably considered for implementation.
“We received the proposal out of the blue by a chap called Rob O’Debt (main picture) who has convinced us to give it a go,” the spokesperson said.
“Mr O’Debt told us that he had numerous colleagues willing to take an active hands-on role in implementing the new system.
“Mr O’Debt said he and his colleagues have had extensive experience in collecting welfare overpayments but have been at a bit of a loose end in recent times so they are available to start work for us as soon as we give the go-ahead.”

The federal Health Minister Mark Butler has announced a radical plan to cut vaping in Australia.
Mr Butler said new legislation now being drafted would outlaw varieties of vapes that were deemed too attractive to users, especially young people.
“Vape flavours such as bubble gum or fruit flavours are just too tempting and supposedly ‘cool’ for users to resist despite the health hazards involved,” Mr Butler said.
“So our new law will ban such artificial ‘fun’ flavours and mandate a very small list of legal flavours that are able to be sold in Australia.”
The Minister said once the new law took effect the list of legal vape flavours would be restricted to just Barnaby’s Butt, Dutton’s Daily Dump, Pauline’s Deep Fryer, and Engadine Maccas.

Queensland Police have appealed to the state’s Liberal National Party for help to clear a major traffic jam that has brought vehicular movements on the M1 motorway between Brisbane and the Gold Coast to a halt for almost a week.
“The problem began when LNP supporters started celebrating the party’s widely anticipated win in the Fadden by-election last Saturday night,” a Queensland Police Service spokesperson said.
“The celebration spread from the party’s local campaign headquarters on Saturday night to the street outside and then further up the road until it reached the M1 and although the core number of LNP members is small, the crowd has grown as curious onlookers and neighbours, plus stranded motorists have been caught up.
“Police have been using megaphones to plead with the LNP members to stop celebrating, telling them that enough is enough and after all Fadden was always a rock solid LNP safe seat.
“But the LNP members have responded by saying it has been their only chance to celebrate a win for years and could well be their last for many more.”
The QPS spokesperson said police would continue to seek a resolution to the problem but the riot squad had been put on stand-by.
