SOCIAL MEDIA:
US tech billionaire Elon Musk has unveiled his plan to meet the challenge to his Twitter messaging platform posed by the new Threads system launched by fellow billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta corporation.
Mr Musk (main picture) said as an advocate of unfettered free speech he did not fear the competition from Threads which has been welcomed by many users of social media for its promise of offering a less confrontational environment for public debate.
“I’m prepared to meet the challenge and will soon be launching a new feature on Twitter to keep it a step ahead of Meta’s offering,” he said.
“The new feature will be called Threats and will enable anyone with a Twitter account who disagrees with anyone else on the platform to send someone around to their house and rough them up.
“This just a natural extension of my in-principle stand in support of free speech.
“In the United States I’ve struck a deal with noted advocates of free speech, the Proud Boys, who’ll designate one of their members to make the visits.
“I’m in the midst of sorting out other organisations in other world markets to perform the same role. People like outlaw bikie gangs, mafia hit squads, mercenaries, Nine Entertainment Co. radio shock jocks and the like.”
Mr Musk said he recognised the new Threats service would come at a cost at a time Twitter faced significant financial challenges.
“Yes, Threats will come at a cost but it will work like the ‘blue tick’ verification system on Twitter that requires subscribers to pay a monthly fee,” he explained.
“Although in a slight refinement of that model, in the case of Threats I intend to impose a substantial monthly fee only on those subscribers who want to opt out of receiving home visits from the Proud Boys or other fair-minded facilitators.”
