Barnaby Joyce says he is ready to once again assume leadership of the National Party if its federal MPs decide to dump current leader David Littleproud.
Following reported speculation this week about the security of Mr Littelproud’s leadership, Mr Joyce spoke to reporters in his New England electorate (main picture) to declare himself available to lead again.
“I think it’s pretty clear that I have the experience, intellect, stature, and vision – a lot of the time double vision – needed to lead the Nationals,” he said. “So I’m ready to stand at any time on any day.”
Mr Joyce later issued a statement clarifying that he was ready to stand for the leadership “before 10am” on any day.
Later still he issued another clarification saying he would be willing to stand before 10am “but might need a bit of help getting to my feet”.

Football Australia says there is no risk of soccer games being affected by the type of industrial action planned by rugby league players protesting against pay and conditions offered by the NRL.
Contracted NRL and NRLW players who are members of the Rugby League Players’ Association plan to boycott media appearances in a bid to break the impasse in negotiations with the NRL.
But players contracted to Football Australia (FA) will remain unaffected, according to a spokesperson for the code’s administrative body.
“I think most Australians realise that football players, especially goalies are members of Actors Equity and do not belong to any players’ association like the one covering professional NRL players,” the FA spokesperson said.

Conservative political group Turning Point Australia is searching for a short-term substitute for Donald Trump Junior as the eldest son of the former US President is delayed from travelling to Australia by alleged visa problems.
The group had invited Mr Trump to speak at events in Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.
“We’re looking for a stand-in until the visa problems can be sorted,” a spokesperson for Turning Point Australia said.
“We’ve been seeking someone who is definitely non-woke, and can easily deliver inflammatory far-right wing tirades full of simplistic fact-free rhetoric.
“So far we’ve narrowed the list to every columnist and commentator employed by News Corp Australia so we need to do a bit more work to whittle down the field.”
