A public reading by Lord Downer of Adelaide Hills of his latest dissertation has prompted the Albanese Government to put Australia’s military on a war footing.
His Lordship invited an audience of his peers to the auditorium he had especially constructed at his family seat Pout House purely for the purpose of delivering public readings of his regular column published by the Australian Financial Review. (below)
At this week’s reading His Lordship reminded the invited audience of the purpose of the regular events.
“As our nation’s longest-serving and most successful, and dare I say dashing, foreign ministers, I have unique and infallible insights into geopolitical events around our globe,” he declared.
“I therefore have invited you all to share in the brilliance of my views.”
His Lordship then tapped his gold-capped black-ivory swagger stick on the stage, at which two naked under-footmen entered and held a parchment containing his latest column published earlier this week. (main picture)
His Lordship then read out loud his column that canvassed the change in China’s attitude to Taiwan caused by Russian President Vladimir Putin’s so-far calamitous war on Ukraine in his bid to assert Russian ownership and control of its neighbour.

“China doesn’t want to be too closely associated with this reckless disaster,” His Lordship declared, pausing to dab his lips with a moist kerchief drawn from one of his laced cuffs.
He went on to detail how China’s previously overtly aggressive stand in the region had been moderated by the increase in cooperation by major allies such as the USA, UK, and Australia who have formed the AUKUS pact.
“The good news is that any military attack by Beijing on Taiwan seems improbable in the next few years,” His Lordship confidently declared before pursing his lips as a signal for a standing ovation by the audience.
Immediately after Lord Downer’s presentation, the Albanese Government cited his words in announcing that it was immediately putting Australia on a war footing given the likelihood of an imminent move by China against Taiwan.
