The die has been well and truly cast. The LNP’s Bowen Hills branch – some may know it as News Queensland – has made it crystal clear it will plumb new depths to defeat the Voice to Parliament referendum in Queensland.
Its two monopoly print mastheads – The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail – will cast aside the last vestiges of professional journalism practice that might possibly still cling stubbornly, near death, to its editorial walls to achieve a supposed victory of sorts to federal Opposition Leader Peter Dutton and the LNP state and federally.
Those shitty, biased rags will champion each and every No argument – no matter how puerile and porously pathetic – and debunk at every available turn the clear majority view that currently exists across Australia that The Voice is a decent, moderate, modest mechanism to firstly recognise our First Nations people in the Constitution and to give them a forum to provide non-binding advice on issues that affect them. It ain’t rocket surgery, folks!

The Courier and Sunday Mails are going to appeal to the elderly racists they think make up their decaying readerships to achieve this despicable result and for that, I brand them racist themselves.
Those rags are going to appeal to the racist supporters of One Nation who haven’t got the basic intelligence to know that shouting #whitelivesmattertoo whenever they hear #blacklivesmatter shows a total lack of understanding of the woeful and grossly disproportionate treatment of African-Americans at the hands of US police and other authorities. That makes them racist too.
Those rags are going to appeal to the racist arguments of racists such as Tony Abbott who ask why 4 per cent of Australians are getting something that’s not being offered to White Australians. That makes them racist too.
But worse of all, in trying to block the Yes vote and thus condemn this nation in international eyes – all for scoring some very debatable points for their chosen side of politics – well, that makes them abhorrently disgusting as well as being red-hot racists.
Will they succeed?
For Queensland’s – and Australia’s sake – we can’t afford to let that happen.
And as a proud Queenslander, I don’t think it will. Queensland will get the referendum over the line. Sure, there are racist in the Sunshine State but they are a thankfully small cohort.
Predictions here and now! The current Newspoll results on the Voice are bullshit.
Four months from now, decency will prevail; Queensland will vote Yes in healthy numbers. Not just because it’s the right thing to do and the vast majority of public figures see that as the truth of the matter, but Queenslanders will support any mechanism that might just ensure future taxpayer funds aimed at closing the gap are as effective as they can possible be.
And, personally, I’ve never argued the LNP’s Bowen Hills branch is all that effective at selling its poisoned, rightwing, messages anyway. They’ve bombed out terrible at the last three state elections and the last federal poll. The reality is these guys would have trouble selling half-priced bottles of Bundy rum to Barnaby Joyce.
So what’s the worry? The stakes here are very, very high so we can’t take a chance. The permanent damage that could be done to our nation’s reputation for a fair go and as a peoples who are generally decent and kind and caring is very, very, real.
We all need to work as hard as hell over coming months to flush these dreadful shit-collecting, faux-newspapers – and their faux-journalist, brown-nosing, senior editors – down the dunny where they belong.
Those of us lacking a mainstream voice need to hit social media hard and make ourselves heard.
So let’s take no prisoners, people! Let the battle for decency and reason begin in earnest!
Don Gordon-Brown.
