Nine News still the One….

…for bullshit promos!

The Bug‘s Media Glass House compilers were on the edge of their seats last night when Channel 9 Brisbane news co-presenter Melissa Downes breathlessly read out before the first ad break this fantastic teaser to keep you watching: King’s Birthday honours row: Next. Did Dame Edna Deserve it!”

Oooh! A row! Poor Barry Humphries! Not even around anymore to defend himself.

After the break, our compilers shuffled even more precariously to the edge of those seats – one momentarily toppled off – as Melissa explained further: “The King’s Birthday honours list, headlined by late comedic great Barry Humphries, is sparking plenty of discussion but one thing beyond debate … all recipients have one thing in common … unwavering dedication to their community and country.”

What! If one swallow does not a summer make, plenty of discussion does not necessarily make for a row! We at the MGH had taken Nine News at its word and were ripe for angry, raised voices. Fisticuffs even. A well-deserved punch in the nose! Let the claret flow!

Maybe reporter Kate Creedon will get to the bottom of this row business. Not a promising start, though, with her reporting that Humphries had been made a Companion of the Order of Australia for his services “as a comedian, as an actor and all-round national treasure”.

And indeed he was. Thanks Kate! She goes on to mention other award winners, from ex-pollies, to opera singers, author, stamp collectors, bellringers and meteorologists. “All Australians who have made an extraordinary contribution in their own way.”

But as for a row? Not the barest whiffs of a mention. Nada. Zilch. Zero.

Our best guess at the MGH is that whoever wrote that shit teaser for poor Melissa to read out got Barry Humphries and Rolf Harris mixed up and he just assumed Dame Edna’s gong would have rightly sparked controversy…. if she had been Harris, that is.

We can’t think of any other plausible explanation. Can you BUGgers out there?
