Tonight’s edition of ABC TV’s public discussion program Q&A will be the last in its current format.
Following the departure of Stan Grant as host, Q&A will be helmed tonight on an interim basis by Radio National Breakfast presenter Patricia Karvelas.
But from next Monday the program, first aired in 2008, will be fronted by veteran commercial TV personality Daryl Somers. (main picture)
The national broadcaster wants to take the opportunity of Stan Grant’s departure to reconfigure and reinvigorate the program, ABC insiders not from ABC Insiders told me.
“After 15 years on air the show is showing its age,” one confided in me. “So we really wanted to grab the opportunity to do something very different.
“Daryl Somers proved during his years fronting Hey Hey It’s Saturday that he’s the ideal choice for us because we want to make the show more entertaining and to add new voices to the discussion.
“One of those new voices will be Dickie Knee who will be on hand throughout every hour-long in-studio discussion to throw in his own unique comments.
“Plus Daryl, as usual, will have Ossie Ostrich by his side to also bring new perspectives to issue such as homelessness, interest rates, the cost of living, the Ukraine war, and the threat from China.
“We’ll also have a Red Faces segment in which guest panellists can sing, dance, perform magic, or whatever talent they wish to showcase and be judged on.”
My ABC source said at this stage it was not planned to include the traditional Chooklotto segment in Q&A but producers were looking at the possibility if they could lure Plucka Duck (below), now in semi-retirement working on a poultry stud farm, to sign with the ABC.
