You can always trust the Murdoch media – don’t be alarmed, there is more to this sentence. Let’s start again.
You can always trust the Murdoch media to protect itself from legitimate questioning of its ethics (or lack of) or editorial policies by going on the attack against others.
Usually it’s the ABC or The Guardian Australia that are in the sights of News Crap Australia, but it can just as easily be any outlet that isn’t side by side with News Crap Australia entities way out on the far right of the political spectrum.
So the recent controversy over what ABC presenter Stan Grant has claimed is a barrage of racist attacks on him saw News Crap Australia rapidly divert attention from suggestions that it had played a role in stoking such racism.
The Guardian Australia dared to analyse the heavy coverage News Crap Australia outlets gave to pillorying Grant since his appearance on an ABC broadcast on the night of the coronation of King Charles III.
At the weekend The Guardian published data showing Murdoch-owned far-right TV channel Sky News and its national far-right broadshit The Australian mentioned the ABC’s coverage of the coronation featuring Grant more than 150 times in the past two weeks
The clear implication was that the rest of the media had moved on but News Crap Australia had lingered on the subject because it saw an opportunity to throw red meat at its far right-wing audience – a tactic which only fuelled the online racist attacks Grant endured.
Grant publicly complained that he felt unprotected by the ABC, after which the national broadcaster’s managing director David Anderson emailed all staff apologising for the fact Grant felt undefended by his employer and also noting the “sustained and vitriolic” anti-ABC reporting by commercial media, ie: News Crap Australia.
“The ABC is never above scrutiny or criticism,” Anderson said. “However, the nature of the anti-ABC reporting from some commercial media outlets is sustained and vitriolic. This has real-world consequences for ABC presenters and journalists who are personally attacked and vilified.”
Anderson’s email also told staff that he had agreed to launch an internal investigation into how the ABC responds to racism affecting its staff.
Now, our Media Glass House researchers say it is important to put this into context.
They say it needs to be recognised that such an investigation by definition will look at how the ABC reacts after racist attacks have been launched against any of its employees.
Yes, the internal inquiry has been made necessary by a less-than-perfect response in the Grant case.
But most importantly, the internal ABC inquiry is necessary only because of the behaviour of outlets such as those run by News Crap Australia which actively helped generate the racist attacks Grant complain have driven him from his job as Q&A host.
So, given the real issue is how a major media organisation had stoked racist sentiments against a public figure, how do you think News Crap Australia outlets reported Anderson’s email?
Of course on Monday they did this…. (below)

Yes, it’s apparently all the ABC’s fault, despite the fact it has been News Crap Australia dumping huge loads of shit on Grant for a fortnight giving the green light to racists to air their views.
The News Crap Australia story effectively blamed the ABC’s yet-to-be reviewed current methods of response to racist attacks for the abuse suffered by Grant.
If it’s possible for a news story to keep a straight face, it did when talking of the announcement of the inquiry and linking it to Grant’s “explosive” claims of being subjected to “relentless” racial abuse, skirting well away from its own role in the whole issue.
Our MGH teams have just one question. Why are they not surprised?
