Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has repeated his call for former Greens and now independent Victorian Senator Lidia Thorpe to seek “support” after she was involved in several recent confrontations with police and members of the public.
His renewed appeal follows statements by Senator Thorpe that she planned to abandon “useless and ineffectual” traditional political practices in favour of direct action in her bid to address ingrained inequality and discrimination faced by indigenous Australians.
“In my short time in the Senate I have found it and the Federal Parliament in general to be not worth a pinch of shit,” Senator Thorpe said.
“So now, instead of engaging in genteel but ultimately futile debates in the upper house I’ll be embracing direct action, mainly though mixed martial arts (MMA). (main picture)
“I’ll be confronting my political opponents and challenging them to cage fights, or even open-air bouts wherever and whenever they want to meet me.”
Senator Thorpe said the Prime Minister should back up his criticisms by facing off with her in a no-holds-barred MMA bout in Canberra.
“I’ll meet him at The Lodge or in the parliamentary forecourt or at any venue of his choice. And I promise I’ll thrash his skinny white arse,” she said.
Senator Thorpe said One Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson was next on her list.
“I can’t wait to body slam her on the Senate floor,” she said. “Watch out Pauline. I’m coming for you.”
