Brisbane’s monopoly metropolitan newspapers have now officially declared, with nary a blush, that they are more interested in clickbaits then contemporary news.
Even “yesterday’s news tomorrow” wouldn’t be a fit slogan for the LNP’s Bowen Hills branch, aka The Courier-Mail and its sister Sunday-Mail. Maybe We’re for last week! needs to be their new slogan under their mastheads?
As the Media Glass House reported earlier this week, the right-wing powers-that-be up at News Queensland first cracked a public hard-on in last weekend’s Sunday Mail in touting the results of a YouGuv poll taken, presumably, largely the week before.
Just touted, mind. No real details. Just the bait being clickety-clicked. And fair enough, we guess, if it’s a poll conducted for The Courier-Mail. But the daily continued the click-bait exercise earlier this week with full page ads (left in the montage at top) with the promise of “poll result you never saw coming” in today’s paper. Well, we thought they mean the printed paper. Our bad, as the young’uns say.
As it now turns out, only subscribers are getting the poll results story online from 10am today (right in montage above). The big print-media splash will presumably be in Saturday’s edition. Big waste of money if it isn’t. Makes some sense, we guess. The Courier’s Monday and Friday print-edition circulations are both shit and getting shittier, and deservedly so. And if you want to delay a story that should have been run on Monday were you a NEWSpaper, what’s the big deal in delaying it another embarrassing day, right?
And as to the poll itself? Now, of course, if any of you BUGgers out there thought the poll was NOT going to be clearly very much in favour of the LNP Opposition led by David Crisafulli, then, firstly, we’re very disappointed in you. But in better news, boy, do we have a collection of very nice old bridges for sale!
Let’s be clear about this. Neither paper’s senior editors would have had the slightest interest in plugging this poll over some days if it contained bad or indifferent news to its beloved LNP government.
That YouGuv poll would have been downplayed and would have only made either paper if management couldn’t have worked out a way to print the story on a dunny roll in one of the stalls in the men’s toilet near the editorial floor up at the LNP’s Bowen Hills branch.
The MGH simply hates to burst the bubble of the LNP public relations officers up at Bowen Hills who sometimes masquerade as real journalists but some salient points.
As they say, a week is a long time in politics; a week and a half more so. That YouGuv poll might have packed some punch a day or two after it had been collated; it’s a stale bottle of piss being presented the following Friday, seeing events since that poll was conducted could have changed public opinion significantly. Yes, either way!
Further, our fearless right-wingers in charge up at Bowen Hills need to push those chubbies back down in their trouser fronts because the next state election is still some 18 months away. If a week-and-a-half is a long time in politics, a year-and-a-half is to infinity and beyond!
Both the current Premier and current Opposition Leader could both be long gone by then. Might be good for Queensland if both of them are but, hey, you didn’t hear that from us!
Either way, it will be an entirely difference ball game by then. Well, okay, maybe not entirely. The two “newspapers” up at Bowen Hills will still be plotting their usual biased, unprofessional, disgustingly one-sided coverages of that October 2024 poll. Aside: You’ve got to admire their zeal since their last three attempts to defeat Labor at state polls have failed dismally! They’re not quick learners, are they?
In the meantime, the LNP’s Bowen Hills branch is determined to show that contemporary, fresh, relevant news comes a very poor second to some LNP-promoting, click-baiting activity.
For that reason alone, The Courier-Mail and The Sunday Mail remain, happily, stupidly, fatally, shitpapers rather than real newspapers. And you know what? We at the Media Glass House and The Bug generally don’t mind at all.
STOP PRESS: The YouGov poll was taken from Thursday March 30 to Wednesday April 5 so our comments in our MGH on Tuesday – the poll was likely taken early last week or perhaps even earlier. So when its results are unveiled they will be about a fortnight old – were actually some days out! Or put another way this poll is much older than the stale bottle of piss we envisaged. It took YouGov some 11 days to collate the results and make them available to last weekend’s Sunday Mail? Maybe that’s the shock poll news that will stun and amaze Queensland, rather than the results themselves?
